Currency Converter & International Travel Money Guide
TripRate is a free currency converter covering 39 currencies with real-time exchange rates. Use it to time your currency exchange before traveling, or convert prices on the spot during your trip. This guide covers calculator usage, money-exchange tips, and key currency information.
1. How to Use the Currency Calculator
On the main screen, pick a base currency (e.g. KRW) and target currencies (e.g. USD, JPY). Conversions happen instantly using real-time rates updated every hour from ExchangeRate-API. You can compare up to five currencies side-by-side.
The keypad supports basic arithmetic. For example, if a hotel rate in Japan shows ¥12,800, type that directly to see the equivalent in your home currency.
2. International Travel Money Tips
The two biggest factors in foreign exchange are timing and method. Airport exchange counters offer the worst rates; the best deals usually come from online bank transfers, prepaid travel cards, or local ATMs in major cities.
- Online bank exchange: Order through your banking app, pick up at airport/branch. Best preferential rates.
- Travel cards: Wise, Revolut, Travel Wallet, etc. — low fees, automatic conversion at purchase.
- Local ATMs: Worth it for longer stays; not great for short trips due to fees.
- City exchange offices: In Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, etc., downtown exchange shops often beat airport rates significantly.
Use rate alerts to get notified when your target rate is reached — this can save up to 5% on short-term volatility.
3. Major Currencies Overview
- USD (US Dollar): World reserve currency. Accepted as secondary payment in many Southeast Asian and Latin American countries. $100 bills face strict counterfeit checks; carry crisp newer notes.
- JPY (Japanese Yen): Treated as a safe-haven currency, but with notable volatility. Japan still relies heavily on cash (rural ryokans, small restaurants), so exchange enough physical yen.
- EUR (Euro): Shared by 20 eurozone countries. Western Europe is card-friendly, but rural Eastern Europe and southern Italy still favor cash.
- CNY (Chinese Yuan): Used in mainland China. Alipay/WeChat Pay dominate; foreign tourists can now register too.
- GBP (British Pound): UK only. Scottish-issued notes are valid in Scotland but sometimes refused in England.
